Abstract
To achieve rational design of organic electron acceptors, a detailed understanding of their electronic structures is essential. Cyclopent[hi]aceanthrylene (CPA) has been widely regarded as an antiaromatic compound and considered a good electron acceptor due to aromatic stabilization upon reduction. However, the resonance structures responsible for this antiaromatic character involve formal charge separation, raising questions about their contribution to the overall electronic structure.
In this study, quantitative aromaticity analyses (HOMA, NICS, and ACID) are used to examine whether CPA can be classified as an antiaromatic compound, indicating that antiaromatic character plays a minor role and that CPA is better described as an aromatic anthracene core fused with a nonaromatic pentagonal ring. Furthermore, this work aims to elucidate the origin of CPA’s electron-accepting behavior and enable broader utilization of CPA-based molecular units.
