Abstract
Carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites are widely used for structural applications, but their weak interfacial adhesion limits impact resistance and long term durability. In this study, a stepwise surface functionalization strategy was applied to improve the carbon fiber-epoxy interfacial performance. After introducing reactive surface functional groups through oxygen plasma treatment, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) was conjugated and reacted with diethanol amine(DEOA) to form a branched polymer interface containing urethane and urea bonds. The modified fibers were characterized by FT-IR, XPS, SEM, AFM, Contact angle analysis, TGA. The composites were evaluated by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), impact testing, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The interphase developed in this study enhanced interfacial adhesion and energy dissipation capacity, thereby improving impact resistance and viscoelastic behavior.
