Abstract
The separation performance of gas chromatography (GC) depends on the molecular interaction characteristics of the stationary phase. Conventional polymeric phases such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) rely mainly on dispersive interactions, which limits selectivity for analytes with similar volatility, particularly in micro-gas chromatography (μGC) systems using short columns. In this study, a spiropyran-functionalized polymeric ion gel (SP-iongel) stationary phase was developed by incorporating a spiropyran-based ionic liquid into a PDMS matrix. The spiropyran moiety provides additional polar interaction sites through nitrogen and oxygen functionalities, enabling dipole–dipole and hydrogen-bonding interactions. A 1 m μGC column coated with the SP-iongel showed improved resolution for closely eluting volatile organic compounds compared to PDMS, demonstrating that spiropyran-functionalized polymeric ion gels effectively enhance molecular selectivity in GC stationary phases.
