Abstract
Hydrogenation of unsaturated synthetic rubbers improves thermal stability, chemical stability, and mechanical properties. However, conventional methods often require toxic hydrazine and peroxides or high-pressure hydrogen gas, limiting safety and applicability. Herein, we present a controllable hydrogenation method using 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) with a Pt/C catalyst under ambient pressure. Partial hydrogenation of polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polystyrene (SBS), polystyrene-block-polybutadiene (PS-b-PB), poly(styrene-co-butadiene) (SBR), and polybutadiene (PBD) was achieved without hazardous reagents. Increasing hydrogenation improved thermal stability and mechanical performance. Notably, moderately hydrogenated (~50%) SBS demonstrated optimal post-functionalization in sulfur crosslinking, underscoring the importance of controlled hydrogenation of unsaturated polymers. Detailed reaction conditions and results are presented.
