Uniaxially Oriented Lyotropic Chromonic Liquid Crystal Reactive Mesogen for Electrochromic Smart Glass

Abstract
A π-extended viologen-based lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal (πV-LCLC) reactive mesogen (RM) was newly designed and synthesized to advance electrochromic (EC) smart glass technology. The πV-LCLC RM forms a stable LCLC phase at room temperature and maintains chemical integrity throughout reversible EC redox transitions among the dication (D), cation-radical (C), and neutral (N) states. A macroscopically uniaxial nanostructure is achieved via shear-coating–induced molecular self-assembly. Subsequent photopolymerization of the oriented πV-LCLC film markedly improves mechanical and chemical stability while enabling polarization-dependent transmittance and color modulation. This πV-LCLC RM provides an effective platform for energy-efficient EC optical devices with tunable transmittance and multicolor switching.
