Dual-Function Tetrazine-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks for Stable Lithium Metal Anodes: Synergistic Regulation of Anion Trapping and Electronic Insulation.

Abstract

Lithium metal anodes (LMAs) are promising candidates for high-energy-density batteries but suffer from dendrite growth arising from anion-induced concentration polarization and electron leakage at the electrode–electrolyte interface. To address these intrinsic challenges, we developed a dual-functional artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer based on a tetrazine-rich covalent organic framework (COF). The electron-deficient tetrazine moieties within the COF skeleton effectively immobilize bulky PF6– anions through strong anion-π interactions. Simultaneously, the intrinsically insulating COF framework suppresses undesired electron transport across the interface, preventing continuous electrolyte decomposition and dendritic lithium growth. This work provides fundamental insight into the synergistic roles of anion regulation and electronic insulation in artificial SEI design, offering a rational strategy for stabilizing lithium metal anodes.
