Structural Coloration of Colloidal Photonic Paints via Hot Air Blowing

Abstract

Structural colors arise from periodic nanostructures, as seen in Morpho butterfly wings and certain beetles. Colloidal crystals offer an effective artificial strategy to structural color. Unlike chemical pigments, structural colors are tunable, iridescent, non-toxic, and resistant to fading. However, their use as practical artistic tools remains largely unexplored. Here, we report colloidal photonic paints that enable freehand painting while maintaining high optical quality. The paints are formulated by dispersing silica particles in acrylate-based resins with optimized volume fractions to ensure brushability on various substrates. A hot air blowing strategy is introduced to enhance particle mobility and induce localized shear, promoting ordered colloidal assembly under nonuniform application. This work establishes a durable, pigment-free structural color paint, bridging colloidal photonics and artistic expression.
