Abstract

Non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) represents a sustainable alternative to conventional PU, which requires toxic monomers for its synthesis. One example of NIPU is polyhydroxyurethane (PHU), synthesized from bis(cyclic carbonate) (BCC) and diamine. In this study, we report a CO2-derived route to prepare PHU and present a strategy for its chemical recycling. The BCC monomer was obtained via the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxide at high efficiency. The CO2-derived monomers were then combined with diamine to yield PHU polymers. Various types of amines were examined to assess their ability to break PHU chains. By utilizing diamine species as degradation agents, oligomers with amino ends were obtained, enabling their repolymerization with additional BCC to regenerate PHU. The chemical recyclability of PHU was demonstrated through repeated degradation-repolymerization cycles, with the recycled polymers maintaining controlled molecular characteristics.
