Abstract

With the growing importance of carbon-neutral technologies due to climate change, photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has been extensively studied as an efficient means of converting solar energy into hydrogen. However, for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), it is necessary to enhance the efficiency of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is the sluggish anodic half-reaction. We developed a photoanode modified with chiral helicoid 432 III Au nanoparticles, which enhance charge separation through localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and activate the low-overpotential reaction pathway of triplet oxygen via the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. By analyzing the relationship of LSPR resonance wavelength, Kuhn’s asymmetry factor, and the interparticle distance with performance of the photoanode, we gain deeper insight into the mechanism of spin-polarized photoelectrochemical (PEC) processes.
