Abstract

A polyethylene (PE) separator coated with a nature-derived flame-retardant layer was developed to enhance the safety and sustainability of lithium-ion batteries. The coating layer was composed of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), a bio-derived and environmentally benign phytic-acid-based cross-linkable monomer, a cross-linker, and endothermic boehmite particles. The UV-induced cross-linked network formed a robust structural framework that preserved separator integrity under thermal stress, while PAA improved mechanical toughness. Upon heating, phosphate groups originating from phytic acid promoted condensed-phase char formation, and boehmite suppressed temperature rise through endothermic dehydration. Moreover, the separator exhibited enhanced electrolyte wettability, ionic conductivity, and thermal stability, demonstrating its potential as a sustainable and safety-enhancing separator for lithium-ion batteries.
