Abstract

Fluorinated phenazine–based donor–acceptor conjugated polymers were synthesized for polymer solar cell applications. Four polymers using benzodithiophene (BDT) or benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene-thiophene (BDTT) donors and linear or branched alkyl side chains were investigated. BDTT-based and branched-chain polymers exhibited deeper HOMO energy levels, resulting in enhanced open-circuit voltage (V_oc). Atomic force microscopy revealed that linear-chain polymers showed uniform morphology in 1,2-dichlorobenzene, while branched-chain polymers required 3% 1,8-diiodooctane for optimization. The best device achieved a power conversion efficiency of 3.41%, with a short-circuit current density of 9.36 mA cm⁻² and a V_oc of 0.66 V. These findings highlight the role of donor units and side-chain engineering in fluorinated phenazine-based polymer solar cells.
