Reversible Chemosensing with Self-Assembled Nanoporous Liquid Crystal Films of Cyanostilbene AIEgens

Abstract

We developed a reversible, sensitive nanoporous fluorescent film for acid-vapor sensing. An AIE-active cyanostilbene was complexed (1:1) with 4-(octyloxy) benzoic acid (C8OB) to form a smectic A mixture. The mixture was UV-cured at 365 nm with a diacrylate crosslinker to lock the layered structure. To create nanopores, C8OB was removed by alkaline extraction; pore formation was confirmed by FT-IR/SAXS, while the smectic order and alignment were retained. Trifluoroacetic acid caused a clear red shift in emission, which fully recovered after triethylamine treatment, giving a linear sub-ppm response. At 10 ppm, the planar-aligned film responded ~ 9 faster than the homeotropic film and remained stable over repeated cycles. Nanoporous sensing films with orientation-dependent sensitivity show excellent reversibility and durability and are promising real-time optical sensors for hazardous gases.
