Bio-inspired Structural Color Composites from Magnetically Aligned Photonic Block Copolymer Colloids

Abstract

Bio-inspired structural colors offer superior durability compared to chemical dyes; however, realizing programmable patterning remains a challenge due to the monolithic nature of conventional response mechanisms. Previous studies utilizing photonic crystal films have faced limitations regarding localized color modulation, complex fabrication processes, and insufficient mechanical strength. Here, we developed a composite material by embedding 1D photonic microparticles into a flexible matrix, enabling programmable optical properties. The microparticles were magnetically aligned within the matrix to exhibit a uniform reflection color. We analyzed the composite’s angle-dependent optical characteristics and demonstrated dynamic color tunability driven by the contraction and stretching of the matrix. Consequently, this mechanically responsive system functions as a optical sensor, offering promising applications in soft robotics, anti-counterfeiting, and strain monitoring technologies.
