Abstract

Rational molecular design of interfacial materials is essential in advancing the performance of wide-bandgap perovskite solar cells. In this work, we develop a simple phosphine oxide–based interlayer with varied substituents to regulate the electronic nature of the defect-binding sites at the perovskite interface. By tuning the substituent structure, the electron-donating ability and surface interaction behavior of the molecules can be effectively controlled. The optimized interlayers show improved interfacial interaction and favorable surface coverage, leading to more efficient defect passivation and reduced interfacial recombination. As a result, the device performance is improved by up to 3% compared with untreated devices. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of substituent engineering in optimizing interlayers for perovskite photovoltaics.
