Exploring Hydrocarbon-Based MEAs for Cost-Effective and Durable PEM Fuel Cells

Abstract
Hydrocarbon-based polymer electrolytes are promising alternatives to PFSA membranes for PEMFCs due to cost and sustainability benefits. However, MEA-level challenges persist: reduced proton conductivity under low humidity, higher radical-induced degradation, and excessive swelling from low EW or high IEC, causing poor dimensional stability and wet-dry cycling durability. These interconnected issues require MEA-level design approaches. This presentation shares Hyundai Motor Company's efforts in hydrocarbon-based MEA design, examining interactions among the membrane, catalyst layer, and ionomer binder. Improvements in low-humidity performance, chemical durability, and structural stability were observed. Remaining challenges and future directions are discussed.
