Abstract
Heavy metal pollution necessitates advanced materials for simultaneous sequestration and real-time monitoring. We present a colorimetric platform using polypyrrole (PPy)-integrated block copolymer (BCP) photonic crystals. Fabricated via emulsion-evaporation self-assembly, these microparticles feature a lamellar nanostructure with vibrant structural colors. In-situ polymerization within P2VP domains creates a 3D coordination network while enhancing chain mobility for rapid ionic transport. Coordination-induced adsorption of metal ions (Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺) triggers domain contraction, resulting in a quantifiable Bragg peak shift. This allows for high-resolution detection of trace ions, outperforming conventional colorimetric sensors. By coupling sensitive ionic binding with macroscopic optical feedback, this work offers a powerful approach for next-generation sensors in environmental water quality assurance.
