Abstract
Structural coloration arising from total internal reflection (TIR) manifests as angle-dependent hues in water droplets on glass, originating from light confinement and interference at curved liquid interfaces. Here, we present a simple and scalable approach to generate dynamic TIR colors through selective vapor condensation on micropatterned glass substrates. Hydrophilic circular domains (10–20 μm in diameter) were defined in SU-8 on oxygen plasma-treated glass, enabling the preferential nucleation of hemispherical water droplets due to wettability contrast. These droplets function as micro-optical elements, producing retroreflective structural colors via the combined effects of TIR. The resulting colors evolve with vapor exposure time and temperature, allowing tunable color generation ranging from blue to orange. Furthermore, spatial color modulation can be achieved by controlling the diameter or controlling the areal density of the circular domains.
