Abstract

Radioactive cesium released from nuclear accidents poses serious environmental and health risks due to its high mobility and long half-life. In this study, we propose a biodegradable and efficient adsorptive hydrogel filter for cesium removal based on a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA) composite immobilized Prussian Blue (PB) as a selective cesium adsorbent. A porous nanofibrous membrane was prepared via electrospinning, followed by freeze-thaw treatment and borax crosslinking to obtain a stable hydrogel structure under high flow aqueous conditions. In the PVA/SA/PB composite membrane, PB exhibits low mechanical stability. To address this issue, differences in solvent solubility between PVA and PB were utilized to enhance structural stability under organic solvent conditions. As a result, the membrane enables stable immobilization of PB, facilitating selective cesium capture and suggesting potential applicability to the removal of other radioactive species.
