Abstract
To develop a material responsive to acid vapor leakage, a triphenylamine (TPA)-based gelator (abbreviated TPA-3M) is newly designed and synthesized. TPA-3M exhibits aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics when it forms ordered aggregates through the restriction of intramolecular rotation of the TPA core. And its organogel exhibits reversible gel-sol transition in response to stimuli such as temperature and pH, coupled with tunable fluorescence changes. To obtain a mechanically stable litmus film with these features, TPA-3M is photopolymerized in a monomeric solvent. The film shows rapid and sensitive acid-triggered color changes with reversible switching as well as fast response and recovery times. This multifunctional film enables visualization of leaks of colorless and odorless acid vapors and is expected to contribute to human safety in chemical industries.
