Abstract
Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have emerged as highly effective hole-selective materials for optimizing photovoltaic performance. While SAMs are known to significantly enhance the efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs), the underlying mechanisms governing their operational stability remain inadequately understood. In this study, we synthesized two novel carbazole-based SAM molecules, designated as CBZC4 and CBZC2, incorporating tert-butyl substituents at the 3,6-positions. This structural modification was designed to facilitate ideal energy-level alignment with the donor’s HOMO and to strengthen intermolecular interactions CBZC2 demonstrated exceptional stability, retaining its performance with a negligible PCE loss of only 0.63% following UV exposure, thereby outperforming conventional PEDOT:PSS and MeO-2PACz. CBZC2 is attributed to its ability to minimize interfacial resistance and extend carrier lifetimes.
