Polymer-MXene Composites for Thermal Management: From Electrothermal Heating to Heat Dissipation

Abstract

MXenes are two-dimensional layered materials composed of transition metals and carbon and/or nitrogen, offering metal-like electrical conductivity and high thermal conductivity. However, their flake-based percolation networks impose conflicting requirements: electrothermal heaters need robust conductive pathways, whereas heat-dissipation materials must provide efficient thermal transport while remaining electrically insulating. This talk presents two MXene/polymer composite approaches. First, we report a completed study on flexible MXene heaters, where the polymer matrix stabilizes interflake contacts and fixes the network to enable reliable Joule heating. Second, we briefly introduce ongoing work on thermally conductive yet electrically insulating composites using a different polymer matrix, focusing on heat-spreading pathway design governed by flake alignment and interfacial thermal resistance.
