Selective Electrodeposition for Organic Semiconductor-Based Photoelectrochemical Cells

Abstract

Organic semiconductor-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells are promising for cost-effective green hydrogen production. However, operational stability is a critical bottleneck as conventional methods like spin or spray coating result in weak interfacial adhesion between catalysts and photoactive layers. Herein, we present controllable electrodeposition strategy for uniform RuO₂ deposition onto PM6:Y6 bulk heterojunction(BHJ) photocathode. Molecular mechanics calculations reveal RuO₂ exhibits stronger binding affinity toward donor (PM6) than acceptor (Y6), leading to non-uniform deposition. By systematically controlling precursor concentrations, we achieved homogeneous catalyst deposition across BHJ surface. This optimized technique enhances PEC performance and ensures sustained operational stability for hydrogen evolution. Our findings demonstrate concentration-controlled electrodeposition is simple, powerful strategy to overcome material-specific adsorption imbalances in organic PEC.
