Fabrication of Gallium-Based Liquid Metal Alloy Films and Their Tribological Performance

Abstract

Gallium-based liquid metals (GaLMs) have attracted attention due to their fluidity, low toxicity, and high thermal conductivity. However, the native oxide skin formed in air restricts interfacial contact with metallic substrates and limits continuous film formation. In this study, an oxide-removal-assisted process was employed to induce reactive alloying with various metals and to fabricate liquid metal alloy films. Alloy formation and phase characteristics were confirmed by surface and structural analyses. Tribological tests at room temperature demonstrated reduced friction coefficients and wear. Under elevated-temperature conditions, the alloy film exhibited a coefficient of friction about 3.8 times lower than that of a commercial lubricant. These results indicate that oxide-removal-enabled GaLM alloy films offer stable lubrication under high-temperature and harsh sliding conditions.
