A Strategy for Reprocessable High-Temperature Thermosets Using Liquid Crystalline Bismaleimide Vitrimers

Abstract

Thermosetting resins form irreversible crosslinked networks, providing excellent thermal stability, mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and chemical resistance. Thermosetting resins are widely used as composite matrices because of their strong interfacial adhesion with reinforcing agents and excellent structural stability after curing; however, their irreversibility limits reprocessability and sustainability. To overcome this limitation, dynamic covalent bonds were introduced into a bismaleimide-based system known for its excellent high-temperature performance and mechanical robustness. In addition, mesogenic monomers were designed and synthesized to further enhance thermomechanical properties and enable the construction of an oriented vitrimer network. The resulting bulk specimens exhibited stable performance at temperatures above 250 °C and retained their properties even after multiple reprocessing cycles.
