Abstract
To achieve efficient and sustainable anionic polymerization in the absence of metal catalysts or co-modulators, a carbodicarbene (CDC) coordinated with N-heterocyclic carbene and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene was employed as a single organic initiator. This CDC successfully facilitated the conjugate-addition polymerization of diverse (meth)acrylic monomers, including functionalized derivatives, under mild and metal-free conditions. Structural analysis via nanoelectrospray ionization mass spectrometry (nESI-MS) identified CDC-derived end-groups, providing direct evidence that the CDC acts as the true initiator during the polymerization process. These findings highlight the potential of CDC as an eco-friendly and efficient organic initiator, expanding the scope of metal-free anionic polymerization for polar vinyl monomers.
