Abstract
Ion-selective electrodialysis (SED) is gaining traction for water purification and resource recovery. Conventional ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) separate mainly by charge but poorly discriminate ions with similar valence or hydration size because their polymer networks are structurally disordered. Nanochannel membranes overcome this by using defined sub-nanometer pathways and tailored interfaces that promote surface-governed transport and strong ion–ion selectivity. This review connects electrochemical transport fundamentals to nanochannel design for SED. We outline core mechanisms—entrance dehydration/partitioning, ion–pore interactions, and dimensionality effects in 1D/2D/3D channels—and survey major platforms (polymers, 2D laminates, frameworks, ceramics). We then distill design rules to tune channel size, interfacial charge, and stability, and discuss hurdles to efficient, durable, and scalable SED.
