Abstract
Climate change resulting from excessive greenhouse gas emissions is a significant global issue, with carbon dioxide (CO2) being the largest contributor to anthropogenic climate change. This research proposes the development of amine-functionalized nanocellulose aerogels sourced from biomass waste for efficient CO2 capture. Nanocellulose is a sustainable polymer that offers renewability, high surface area, biodegradability, and minimal environmental footprint. The addition of amine groups is anticipated to enhance CO2 adsorption through strong chemisorption, while the highly porous aerogel network facilitates gas diffusion and enhances adsorption capacity. This study aims to valorize low-value biomass waste into biodegradable high-performance CO2 adsorbents, offering a dual benefit for climate change mitigation and renewable biomass energy transition adhering to the principles of negative carbon solution.
