Scalable Delamination of Multilayer MXene by High-Pressure Homogenization with Subsequent Surface Functionalization

Abstract

Scalable MXene delamination is essential for widespread applications, particularly when the resulting nanosheets are suitable for surface functionalization, which enables precise control over their physicochemical properties. In this study, high-pressure homogenization (HPH) is demonstrated as a rapid and scalable method to delaminate multilayer Ti3C2Tx (Tx = OH, O, F) MXene into few-layer nanosheets without chemical intercalants or repeated washing steps. The degree of exfoliation is controlled by varying the number of HPH passes. The resulting nanosheets are subsequently functionalized with catechol-based polymer ligands, with higher delamination degrees leading to enhanced functionalization efficiency.
