Abstract
Conjugated polymers are promising for next-generation flexible sensors, yet their commercialization is hindered by limited gas sensitivity. This study presents a facile strategy to enhance sensitivity by introducing a nanoporous structure into a poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) active layer via a nonsolvent immersion (NSI) process. Among the tested nonsolvents, n-hexane (Ra = 8.6 MPa1/2), which exhibits the smallest solubility distance to P3HT, acted as a selective plasticizer/marginal solvent. This interaction induced the formation of a deep, interconnected porous network with the highest surface roughness (Rq = 2.98 nm), thereby maximizing the effective surface area for gas adsorption. Consequently, the hexane-treated sensor demonstrated a fourfold enhancement in NO2 sensitivity compared to pristine P3HT. This solvent-driven engineering offers a practical, scalable route for high-performance organic gas sensors.
