Abstract

Solution-processed organic photodetectors (OPDs) face critical limitations in scalability and reproducibility, driving the development of vacuum-deposited OPDs analogous to OLEDs. Although fullerene acceptors dominate current devices, their limited absorption tunability, high cost, and poor stability hinder commercialization. Here, we report a series of vacuum-depositable donor–acceptor non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) with systematically increased acceptor electronegativity. Despite negligible changes in energy levels, enhanced electronegativity induces pronounced aggregation changes, strengthening J-aggregation in evaporated thin films. This controlled aggregation reduces trap-assisted noise and enhances responsivity, detectivity, thermal stability, and charge carrier mobility, enabling performance superior to conventional C60-based OPDs. These results establish molecularly controlled aggregation as a key strategy for fullerene replacement in vacuum-deposited OPDs.
