Abstract
Interfacial polymerization is the industrial standard for desalination membranes. Extending this to nonaqueous environments, such as organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN), is vital for decarbonizing chemical industries. However, conventional polyamide thin-film composite (TFC) membranes often underperform in organic solvents due to their hydrophilic nature and poor resistance to swelling and plasticization. To address this issue, we report a molecular engineering approach using "acid-catalyzed interfacial polymerization" to develop advanced TFC membranes. Our strategy involves (1) switching the chemical linkage from amide to imine and (2) incorporating shape-persistent, micropore-generating units. The resulting membranes show exceptional performance in liquid hydrocarbon fractionation and ion separation for redox flow batteries.
