Abstract

With the growth of domestic innovative Small Modular Reactors (i-SMR), the development of Reactor Coolant Pumps (RCP) has become increasingly important. i-SMR are modularized and scaled-down versions of conventional nuclear power plants, and their design characteristics require operation under elevated environmental temperature conditions. Accordingly, the development of a canned type motor with Insulation Class-C thermal endurance is essential. This study aims to develop a high-temperature insulation system applicable to canned type motors for i-SMR RCP applications. As an initial step, insulation systems capable of withstanding ultra-high-temperature conditions were recommended by insulation material manufacturers (ISOVOLTA and NRK), and suitable insulation materials were selected. A preliminary lifetime assessment was then performed by applying the Arrhenius model, which correlates temperature and time through reaction rate analysis. The results confirmed that the selected insulation system satisfies the design life of 40 years
