Transforming plastic waste: catalytic routes to sustainable chemicals

Abstract

We present sustainable catalytic methods for converting waste plastics into valuable chemicals. Unlike traditional chemical recycling, which focuses on recovering monomers through depolymerization, catalytic upcycling induces novel chemical reactions to yield structurally distinct, value-added products. In this presentation, we detailed a metal-catalyzed dehydrogenation of aliphatic alcohols-derived from the depolymerization of various polyesters-and demonstrate their application in synthesizing biodegradable polymers. This strategy highlights the potential of fossil fuel-based plastics to serve as sustainable carbon resources for the future.
