Abstract
Polymethyl methacrylate composite thin films are widely used for their excellent optical transparency and processability. Surface roughness control is crucial for applications, but achieving high roughness with single-phase uniformity is challenging. Poor solvents promote roughness via phase separation, yet harm film homogeneity. Here, dimethylformamide—a good solvent with high polymethyl methacrylate solubility, surface tension, and slow evaporation—was used to tune surface morphology in quantum dot–polymethyl methacrylate films without phase separation. During spin coating, solvent evaporation kinetics and thermodynamic stability interplay determined the final structure. This solvent engineering yields uniform composite films with tunable roughness, enhanced photoluminescence, and improved light scattering.
