Making and Un-making Poly(trisulfides) for Sustainable Applications

There have been increasing efforts to add value to the sulfur supply chain by converting excess elemental sulfur into functional materials.1 I will discuss our research in this area and how we are applying poly(trisulfides) in sustainable e-waste recycling, recyclable adhesives, photolithography, protective coatings, and recyclable plastics.2-5 The key innovations in this program are the discovery of new reactions to make poly(trisulfides) and methods to “un-make” them by depolymerization at the end of their service life. These methods include novel photochemical ring-opening polymerizations of cyclic trisulfides3,4 and a new trisulfide metathesis polymerization to make recyclable analogs of polyethylene.5 (1) T.
