The rapid increase in plastic consumption has raised global concerns over PET waste. PET materials are widespread used in bottles and textiles, and its waste generation combined with poor degradability and limited textile recycling, leads to long-term environmental persistence and significant landfilling. Several chemical and thermal routes have been explored for PET recycling, with aminolysis offering promising nitrogen-rich products, while carbonization and co-processing strategies are used to overcome the inherently low carbon yield of PET.

This study proposes a simple and scalable strategy combining PET aminolysis and carbonization to produce nitrogen-doped carbon materials from PET fabrics. The resulting materials exhibit a high nitrogen content (8–10 wt%) and show strong potential for applications in energy storage, catalysis, and adsorption, offering a sustainable solution for upcycling of PET textile waste.
