내용
Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is essential in chemical and biological processes but is often limited by unstable intermediates. Inspired by quinone-based PCET in biological systems, we develop titanium–quinone complexes for light-driven PCET catalysis. Redox-active quinone ligands combined with electron-poor titanium centers enable efficient charge transfer. Photoexcitation induces ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), generating transient semiquinone species that act as both hydrogen atom donors and acceptors. Earth-abundant d⁰ titanium stabilizes radical intermediates via Lewis acid interactions in both ground and excited states. The β-cis Salen backbone promotes fast intersystem crossing (ISC), enhancing photocatalytic activity in a first-row transition metal system. This modular design provides a sustainable platform for efficient PCET chemistry.
