Shellac is an insect-derived natural resin with excellent film-forming ability and environmental friendliness, making it a promising material for films and coatings. Shellac contains abundant carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, which enable intermolecular network formation through crosslinking reactions. This structure creates a dense microstructure and improves film stability and moisture resistance.
In this study, a shellac-based film with enhanced barrier performance was fabricated by incorporating a biomass-based crosslinking agent. The introduction of crosslinking effectively reduced film brittleness and the elastic modulus, leading to a more flexible mechanical behavior that withstood repeated deformation without fracture. Furthermore, the film was designed to exhibit improved moisture and oxygen barrier properties, highlighting the potential of crosslinked shellac films as environmentally friendly and high-performance materials for advanced film and coating applications.
