Organic photoanodes are promising for solar-driven oxidation reactions but are limited by inefficient interfacial charge extraction and poor stability in aqueous electrolytes. Here, we demonstrate a multifunctional polymer surface modification strategy using PEIE-modified SnO₂ to enhance both efficiency and operational stability.
The PEIE-modified SnO₂ photoanode delivers a high photocurrent density of 15.18 mA cm⁻² at 1.23 V_RHE during sulfite oxidation and shows a cathodic onset shift from 0.49 to 0.23 V_RHE. PEIE-induced interfacial dipoles improve energy-level alignment and electron extraction while suppressing interfacial recombination. Enhanced interfacial adhesion prevents active-layer delamination, enabling stable operation with ~90% photocurrent retention after 30 min.
