Effects of epoxy-functional chain extender on thermal, rheology, and mechanical properties for recycled PA66

The mechanical recycling of polyamide 66 (rPA66) is a promising solution for enhancing recyclability in engineering plastics. In this study, we propose epoxy-functional chain extenders (CEs) contained with styrene, methyl methacrylate (MMA), and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) were successfully synthesized, and used to modify rPA66 via reactive extrusion. This additive was compounded with rPA66 at concentrations of 1, 3, and 5 phr. FT-IR and NMR analysis were conducted to confirm chemical structures. The crystallization temperature, crystallinity and thermal stabilities were investigated by DSC and TGA analysis. Torque rheometry and oscillatory shear measurements confirmed that both CEs increased melt viscosity and elasticity, indicating successful chain extension and, long-chain branching.
