Polydiacetylene (PDA) is a conjugated polymer that exhibits optical transition in response to various external stimuli, and precise arrangement of monomers is essential for the polymerization. Since the distance between peptide strands within β-sheet is close to the distance between diacetylene monomers required for the polymerization, the introduction of β-sheet-forming peptide such as diphenylalanine (Phe-Phe) can promote proper alignment of monomers for the polymerization.
In this study, PCDA-Phe-Phe was synthesized using PCDA monomer and Phe-Phe peptide that forms antiparallel β-sheet through hydrogen bonding between backbones and aromatic stacking between phenyl rings. Our results confirmed that peptide functionalization promoted the ordered self-assembly of monomers, significantly improving polymerization efficiency. In addition, the polymerized PDA-Phe-Phe showed higher thermal sensitivity and selectivity for organic solvents with lower polarity than those of PDA.
