Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have attracted significant attention as multifunctional nanocarriers owing to their facile synthesis, low intrinsic toxicity, high chemical stability, and tunable pore and particle architectures. Benefiting from their large specific surface area, high pore volume, and excellent biocompatibility, MSNs have been widely explored for controlled drug delivery and stimulus-responsive release applications. Herein, we report a mesoporous silica–coated multi-shell upconversion nanoparticle (MUmS) nanoplatform co-loading a photosensitizer (PS) and a manganese carbonyl (MnCO) derivative to achieve NIR-triggered integration of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with CO-based gas therapy. Upon NIR irradiation, the MUmS-based nanoplatform exhibited efficient upconversion luminescence, robust singlet oxygen generation, and controllable CO release.
