Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are critical for the performance of anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs). In this study, poly(4-vinylbenzyl piperidine-co-4-octylstyrene) copolymers with different mole ratios were synthesized via radical polymerization to investigate the effect of crosslinking degree on AEM properties. The copolymers possess an ether-free backbone and a balanced rigid/soft segment structure, providing good mechanical and chemical stability.
Crosslinking was achieved using 1,6-dibromohexane through a quaternization–crosslinking process, introducing piperidinium groups. With increasing crosslinking degree, the ion exchange capacity (IEC) and ion conductivity increased. Optimization of crosslinking effectively reduced the trade-off between ion conductivity and dimensional stability, leading to balanced membrane performance.
