As the next-generation foldable display and wearable electronics applications are developed, demand for substrate materials with high flexibility and optical transparency increases. Polyimide (PI) has been used as a substrate material with excellent mechanical and thermal stability which ensures performance reliability of microelectronic devices. However, the aromatic chemical structure in aromatic PI provides chain rigidity and strong inter-chain interactions by forming a charge-transfer complex (CTC), which causes stiffness and coloration in the resulting polymer film. Here, we propose the design of a multiblock PI by introducing an alicyclic dianhydride and alkoxy amines with various chain lengths. The designed PI possesses aliphatic units for high transparency (> 80%), as well as long propylene oxide units for flexibility (> 165%). We also demonstrate a systematic study on the multiblock PI materials to reveal the optimal composition for satisfying two conflicting properties.
