Development of degradable polymers can be advanced using Sulfur(VI) fluoride exchange (SuFEx) chemistry by introducing cleavable linkages into polymer structures. The sulfonate bonds formed through SuFEx are created in a controlled way and can be broken under specific conditions. Based on this property, we use SuFEx chemistry to build degradable polymer systems with clear and well-defined structures. Using a PS/PMMA backbone together with polyester and polyacrylate side chains, we prepared polymers that show selective degradation. The degradation behavior varies depending on pH and basic conditions. This responsiveness enables controlled polymer breakdown under desired environments. Such tunable degradation is useful for designing materials with programmed lifetimes. It also offers opportunities for applications that require controlled removal or recycling of polymer materials.
