Electrocatalysis is a key driver advancing renewable-energy-driven hydrogen economy and commodity chemical production. The success of electrocatalysis hinges primarily on achieving high catalytic selectivity along with maximum activity and sustained longevity. Important electrocatalytic energy conversion reactions, however, are often constrained by the scaling relationship, which sets the intrinsic limitation in designing highly selective and active electrocatalysts. Our group has been working on the design of new electrocatalytic materials that can break the scaling relationship, including atomically dispersed metals, intermetallic compounds, and interstitial compounds. In this presentation, I present our recent endeavors for designing carbon-supported atomically dispersed metal (M-N/C) catalysts that promote selective electrocatalysis of four-electron (4e-) vs. 2e- oxygen reduction reaction and chlorine evolution reaction (CER) over parasitic oxygen evolution reaction (OER).
