Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes have been extensively applied as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) because of their excellent proton conductivity and chemical robustness. Despite these advantages, the randomly connected channel network in PFSA membranes leads to elevated hydrogen permeability, which poses a major constraint on achieving high PEMWE performance.

To address this limitation, a PFSA/h-BN composite membrane with a tailored channel architecture was developed using a foam-assisted fabrication approach. A stable PFSA/h-BN composite foam was successfully formed, which is attributed to the adsorption behavior of the PFSA ionomer at the air–water interface. After the foam was dried, the composite membrane was produced through a hot-pressing process. Finally, the properties of the PFSA/h-BN composite membrane were investigated to optimize membrane performance.
