Fogging reduces transparency of optical materials and can impair visibility. To exhibit antifogging perfomance, hydrophilic groups are typically introduced into optical materials. However, exclusively hydrophilic surfaces often exhibit limited durability under humid conditions. Therefore, hydrophobic groups were introduced to impart amphiphilicity to the ladder-like polysilsesquioxane (LPS), which can improve antifogging properties. In this study, ladder-like poly(phenyl-co-glycidyloxypropyl)silsesquioxane was synthesized via a sol-gel reaction of trimethoxyphenylsilane (PTMS) and 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS). For comparison, another LPS was synthesized using only GPTMS. The two LPS exhibited amphiphilic and hydrophilic characteristics, respectively, and were coated onto glass substrates using an applicator. For each material, the chemical structure and antifogging properties were analyzed by various methods.
