The synthesized spheres feature a three-dimensionally ordered inverse opal structure. The inherent optical absorption of the carbon framework reduces background scattering, allowing for observable structural colors. The amphiphilic nature of the pseudo-humin enables the infiltration of analytes into the nanopores, which leads to a change in the effective refractive index. Based on Bragg’s law, this results in a visible color shift, potentially allowing for the monitoring of sensing targets without external power. This sugar-derived platform suggests a feasible approach for non-powered sensors to detect certain environmental changes in industrial settings.
