Hydrogen-Bonding–Induced Elastic and Adhesive Silicon Anodes via UPy Functionalization

Silicon (Si) anodes are promising candidates for high–energy-density lithium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacity; however, their practical application is limited by severe volume expansion, which causes electrode pulverization and rapid capacity fading. Here, we introduce ureidopyrimidinone-functionalized silicon (Si-UPy), where multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions simultaneously enhance interparticle adhesion and mechanical elasticity. By systematically varying the Si/Si-UPy ratio, we reveal that elasticity, rather than adhesion alone, governs stable electrochemical performance. The optimized SiUPy20 anode containing 20 wt% Si-UPy delivers improved cycling stability and rate capability by accommodating volume changes and stabilizing the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) through physical cross-linking. Overall, this work provides a simple and effective strategy for designing elastic and durable Si-based anodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
